Civil Registration & other Vital Records

  • FamilySearch Published by the Mormon’s includes the Irish Civil Registration Indexes, 1845 to 1958 – these records are free, and can be used to order a copy certificate from the General Register Office of Ireland
  • FindMyPast.ie (€€) have a number of vital record collections covering Ireland including Marriage Licence Bonds: Diocese of Cloyne 1630-1800
  • General Register Office of Ireland (Oifig an Ard-Chláraitheora) (€€) is the central  repository for records relating to births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships and domestic adoptions in the Republic of Ireland. Certificates of life events may be ordered on www.certificates.ie
  • General Register Office Northern Ireland (€€) provides an online service for ordering Birth, Marriage and Death certificates for the six counties of Northern Ireland from 1864 (1845 for non-Roman Catholic marriages)
  • All Certs Ireland (€€) provides an online service for ordering Birth, Marriage and Death certificates

  • Irish Family Research (€€) has transcriptions to a number of 19th century local directories
  • Failte Romhat has transcriptions to a number of directories as well as cemetery transcriptions and old maps

Emigration/Immigration Records

  • Ancestry.com (€€) has a number of shipping and immigration related records
  • FindMyPast.ie (€€) provides access to the names of 40,000 passengers who travelled from North America to Britain and Ireland between 1858 and 1870
  • FindMyPast.co.uk (€€) provides access to shipping manifests including digital images
  • Ellis Island (€€) has a database of individuals who passed through Ellis Island in New York. Includes digital images

Occupation & Military Records

  • Ancestry.com (€€) has transcriptions of ‘An Index to the Royal Irish Constabulary, 1816-1921′ and the ‘Flax Growers Bounty List, 1796′
  • FindMyPast.ie (€€) has a fully indexed version of the Sinn Fein Rebellion Handbook which includes names and details of Irish rebels and British soldiers who fought in the Easter Rising. They also have other collections including the William Smith O’Brien Petition 1848-1849
  • Coastguards of Yesteryear This site contains information about those who lived and worked around the Irish coastline

Property Records

  • www.askaboutireland.ie from the Irish Library Council with full access to Griffith’s Valuation
  • FindMyPast.ie (€€) has access to Griffith’s Valuation, the Landed Estate Court Rentals 1850-1885 and Estate Commissioners Offices, Applications from Evicted Tenants 1907. The site also has an index (no images) to the Tithe Defaulters List (1831)
  • Origins Network (€€) has access to many Irish related records including Griffith’s Valuation

Wills, Probate & Burial Records

  • FindMyPast.ie (€€) has almost a million birth, marriage and death records dating back to the 13th century
  • Glasnevin Trust (€€) provides access to records of burials at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin from 1828 to the present day
  • Origins Network (€€) has a copy of the National Archives of Ireland index to wills
  • Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has published an index to the Calendars of Wills and Administrations for Armagh, Belfast & Londonderry District Registries for 1858 to c1900. Digital images of the wills is set to follow shortly. PRONI has also published images from will transcripts contained in Will Books
  • Ulster Historical Foundation (€€) has the Calendars of Wills and Administrations from 1858 to 1900
